In 1931 (during the depression) Gus
Kachulis and his brother Louis, opened Park Luncheonette in the working
class community and catered to the needs of the factory workers that
surrounded the area. When McCarren Park Pool opened in 1936 the clientele
changed to the thousands of people who would come from all over the city
to go to the pool every day. Thus, the Park Luncheonette egg cream became
famous all over the city. In 1950 their nephew Chris Kachulis arrived
from Greece with his young bride Helen and within a couple of years they
started running the Luncheonette as the brothers returned to Greece to
retire. As Chris and Helen retired in (2002) their son Demetri took over
Park Luncheonette in order to continue the family tradition of serving the
neighborhood where he and his three sisters grew up. With the Pool closed
for more than twenty five years he knew that Park Luncheonette also had to
change to survive. In 2005 with the help of his wife Dina and chef Gary
Kuschnereit he turned the Luncheonette into a full service restaurant with
the premise of providing very high quality dishes by using the best
quality ingredients, like organic eggs. |
